Jolie Gonzales Masmela

Instructor of Piano, Voice and Guitar

My Background: I am a Colombian Conductor, singer, piano, and guitarist player based in Greeley, Colorado. Throughout my musical career, I have studied different genres such as Classical Music, pop music, and South America folk music. I was music director at Universidad de Ibague in my hometown in Colombia and was artist in Residence at Global Music School in Shanghai, China. This blend of music and cultures helps me to incorporate different teaching styles and techniques. Currently, I am doing my Doctoral Studies in Orchestral conducting at University of Northern Colorado.

What I love about teaching: I enjoy sharing the passion for music with my students and helping them find their confidence. Also, I love when my students find in my music classes a place to be and feel free and happy.

One way I help my students succeed and flourish: I like to teach my students that music is like life, you must be patient, and you must enjoy the journey while you achieve your goals. The most important thing is not the goal but how you get there. I like to accompany my students on that path.

Performance Experience: I have been singing since I was a child in choirs and as a folk music singer in my hometown Colombia. During my master’s degree at Northwestern State University, I was pianist accompanist for vocalists and instrumentalists. As a conductor I have conducted in my Hometown in Colombia, in Louisiana with Northwestern State University Symphony Orchestra, with Rapides Symphony Orchestra, with GMS Orchestras in Shanghai China, and with University of Northern Colorado Symphony Orchestra.

Hometown: Ibague. Colombia

My Musical Influences: Boleros, Jazz, Queen, traditional Colombian music, Beethoven… and the list is endless.

Favorite hobby or activity when not teaching or playing music: I love to write.

Favorite food: Mediterranean food
