Julie Koenig

Instructor of Voice and Piano

My Background: My parents say I started singing before I could talk! Singing is my greatest joy, closely followed by piano, which I began studying at age 7. At the same age, I began performing in community theatre, and have since performed in dozens of musicals, plays and operas. I recently completed my Master’s degree in Jazz Studies (Voice) at the University of Northern Colorado; previously, I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Music Education (Voice) at Otterbein University in Ohio. I’ve been sharing my love of music through private lessons since 2012. Working one-on-one with students is the most fulfilling job – I love seeing their progress every week! In addition to teaching at Flourish, I teach jazz voice lessons at Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne, WY.

What I love about teaching: Music has enhanced my life, so I’m dedicated to passing that on to my students (as my teachers did for me!) I have watched my students become more confident, make friends, and pursue challenges as a result of taking music lessons. My favorite moments usually happen at recitals and concerts – I love watching a student take pride in a successful performance!

One way I help my students succeed and Flourish: It’s important to me that all my students understand the value of hard work and creativity. There’s a common misconception that innate “talent” is required for success in music, but I disagree! Anyone can sing or play an instrument as long as they’re willing to learn and practice. My favorite moments are when my students surprise themselves with their own accomplishments!

Performance Experience: Before I moved to Colorado, I sang with the Columbus Symphony Chorus (Ohio) for four years. I also performed in my jazz duo, Duplicity, at various Columbus venues. While studying at UNC, I sang in the premiere vocal jazz group, Vocal Lab, and was honored to be recognized by DownBeat Magazine for Outstanding Performance in the Graduate Category for Vocal Jazz. Currently, I sing every week at New Thought Center for Spiritual Living in Loveland, CO, and perform regularly in downtown Greeley.
