Our Philosophy

You can flourish in music and in life with a growth mindset.

Grow and Flourish

When you step into one of our lesson rooms,  you will notice the huge tree mural on the wall. Have you seen the Aspen, Evergreen or Willow room?

Perhaps you have noticed how our logo looks like a tree? Or how we talk so much about growth? Or how our name is “Flourish” Music Academy?

All of that is intentional.

To us, teaching music is about much more than just making someone a better musician.

We want to empower our students to flourish in both music and in life.

Music has so many benefits that it can bring to someone’s life.

Benefits like:

  • the pure joy of making music itself
  • the social, emotional, and even therapeutic benefits
  • the academic, brain-building benefits
  • the confidence, resilience and grit gained when you work hard to overcome challenges and learn new skills

We believe that everyone has the ability to learn music. You just have to decide that you want to develop your ability as a musician and put in the effort to grow.

And it really is up to you.

According to Dr. Carol Dweck’s groundbreaking research detailed in her book Mindset – we can either operate under a “fixed mindset” or “growth mindset”.

“Fixed” vs “Growth” Mindset

With a “fixed mindset” I believe my abilities are fixed, therefore if something doesn’t come easily I won’t ever be good at it and I should just give up.

But with a “growth mindset” I believe my abilities can be developed (YES, even musical abilities!) and I am motivated to work at improving.

With a “fixed mindset” I am focused on proving my worth to others by only doing things I am already good at.

With a “growth mindset” however, I acquire grit, focus and perseverance as I work to develop my abilities. Any mistake along the way is just part of the process of growth.  I gain confidence as I see myself tackling challenges and succeeding.

Growth Mindset at Flourish

At Flourish Music Academy, we use growth mindset principles to help our students grow into the musician they want to be.

Learning to play an instrument or sing may not always be easy. In fact, you should expect challenges along the way, and possibly times you or your child want to quit.

We are committed to walking with you through every step of the way. When you can’t see further than the current obstacle holding you back, we can give you the long perspective of how far you have come and what you are capable of still achieving.

And we give you the steps you need to overcome that obstacle and continue on your path of growth.

What excites us the most is that as our students grow in their musical abilities, they also gain social, emotional and brain-building benefits, plus they gain confidence and grit from the learning process itself.

And that brings us back to our trees. Because to us, trees were the perfect symbol of the kind of growth and benefits we want our students to acquire. Benefits that may take time, even years to grow, but will last for the rest of their lives.

A tree is rooted deep into the ground, able to find nourishment from many sources.

A tree is beautiful and life-giving to the plants, animals and people around it.

A tree withstands weather of all kinds, but still holds on, lasting for many years to come.

Are you ready to grow?

It’s easy to get started.
