This month, we are excited to feature one of our longest-standing students, David Sanchez!
David is a junior at Greeley Central High School. Outside of Flourish, he plays guitar in church and for his school’s jazz band. This is his second time being featured for Student Spotlight; his first interview was in 2018! We’ve loved watching him grow as a musician since then.
Here’s what David’s teacher, Mr. Andres Meza, had to say about him:

“David is one of my longest active students, and he is also one of my most advanced. He performs with his high school jazz band and leads the music for his church locally. We have recently been doing a lot of work over chord voicing and reaffirming his music theory skills. He is always striving to learn more and looking to expand his musical tastes. Not only has he grown as a musician himself, but he has also been sharing his musical knowledge with his family and others, teaching them what he knows. As a teacher, I love seeing students going into their community and sharing their talents. He is a student who is excelling in so many ways, and it has been incredible to see him grow and mature as a musician and student.”

How long have you taken guitar lessons?
What do you love about playing guitar?
What I love about playing guitar is the diversity of styles I can explore and play. Also, I like how a guitar can accompany many different types of instruments and voice too. Being able to explore different types of music really helps me grow my music vocabulary.
Mr. Andres says that you’ve been working hard on chord voicing and theory. Why are these skills important to you, and how have they helped your guitar playing?
Chord voicing and theory are important skills to me because these help me be able to move around the neck of the guitar, and widen my music range in guitar. These have helped my guitar playing by being able to construct jazz chords and be able to play all the funky chords too. It also has opened my music theory knowledge, and I am able to make more musical decisions that will help make a piece sound beautiful.
What do you like about Flourish?
What I like about Flourish is the teachers! They work with me and work at my pace to be able to learn any piece of music. Also, I am able to ask different types of questions such as music theory questions and instrument questions that will help me understand my instrument and music.
What else do you like to do?
I also do sports such as soccer and volleyball. I love to stay active and be able to work in a team and be able to overcome challenges with peers.
