This month, we’re excited to feature piano student Jayden Zhang!
Jayden is a 4th grader at Frontier Academy. In February, he wrote and performed an original composition for our 2022 Composition Festival! If you haven’t heard this year’s compositions yet, watch the video here. Jayden’s performance is first.
Here’s what Jayden’s piano teacher, Yuan Li, had to say about him:
“He is such a delight to work with. He joined Flourish last October, but has performed in all of the Flourish recitals. He is so motivated and serious about playing the piano. This month, he participated in the Composition Festival (he composed his first composition, “Summertime”), and we have decided to do RCM Piano Level 1 Exam in June.”
Read our interview with Jayden below.
How long have you taken piano lessons?
3.5 years.
What do you love about playing the piano?
I enjoy the way I play – when I feel happy, I like to play quicker, and when I feel excited, I play stronger. I also like that I can use the piano to play some favorite songs I hear. For example, I like the background music from a game called “Tetris”. When I found out I can use the piano to play it myself, it felt very rewarding.
You recently participated in the Composition Festival with your first original piece, “Summertime”. How did you create your composition?
I thought of a little tune that started from G to C, and kind of changed the tune up and added it to the last line. On the middle line, I chose a tune that started from C to G.
What do you like about Flourish?
I like Flourish because it is like a video game where you can level up. I also like the dress rehearsal, where everyone can share what they have learned and I can hear other people playing.
What else do you like to do?
I like playing Minecraft, playing the recorder, reading, math, and coding.
