STUDENT SPOTLIGHT – Reymundo Ocampo Flores

Monday March 1, 2021

This month, we’re excited to feature piano student Reymundo Ocampo Flores!

Rey is a 7th grader at Chappelow Arts Magnet School. He studies piano with Ms. Julie, who says that Rey is extremely motivated and creative.

Rey is currently completing Level 2 in the Achievement Program, and is very close to the 2000 points required for the Flourish Maestro Award! He will be starting Level 3 within the next month.

Rey participated in the RCM exam last spring, for which he received First Class Honors. He was also recently featured in our 2021 Composition Festival with his original piece, “Demo”.

PICTURED RIGHT: Rey figured out how to set his composition as his background on Zoom! This photo was taken during his Dress Rehearsal with Mr. Thomas and Ms. Joy.

Read the interview below to learn more about Reymundo!

How long have you taken piano lessons?

I have been playing piano for around two and a half years, but I have been receiving lessons at Flourish for about a year of that time.

What do you love about playing piano?

Playing piano has so much to offer from learning the basics of music to jamming out by playing your favorite songs but I would have to say that my favorite part about playing piano is that you can make your own composition. I’ve made 3 compositions so far which was amazing since you get to add your own spark in the music you make.

Ms. Julie tells us that you are very close to completing the requirements for the Flourish Maestro Award (Level 2)! What are some things you’ve done to earn extra points?

Right now Ms. Julie and I have been working on the small things such as sight reading and hearing practices to get those final points to get the Maestro Award.

What do you like about Flourish?

Flourish all around is a great music school; it has great teachers, a nice environment, and just a great template of what a music school should be.

What else do you like to do?

You’ve guessed it…it’s video games. I mean everyone can find something in a video game that they love. For me it’s your typical action game that allows me to both enjoy some time and play with friends. Also sleeping what kind of person would I be if I didn’t love sleep!
